Twelve-year-old Finn and his stressed-out single mother, Cynthia have just moved to a new town to start a new life. Finn, however, is having some trouble fitting in and is being tormented by the local bully. One day everything changes: this is the day that Finn meets a Labrador retriever named Marshall. Finn realizes Marshall is seriously injured and decides to rescue him from an animal hoarder. With the help of his 17-year-old cousin, Grace, Finn takes Marshall to the local vet, Doc Henry, for help. In the process Marshall runs away and embarks on a series of funny, and heartwarming adventures, while, everyone, including Finn, Grace, Cynthia and the handsome veterinarian Doc Henry, desperately look for him.
